| Hello and welcome to The Family Grapevine. It is just over 10 years since our first edition appeared in East Surrey. We became friends when both our sons were at Holmesdale School in 1995. Although our backgrounds were very different, Sheridan's in Suzuki violin teaching and Nikki's in Maths teaching up to secondary level, we found that we had a great deal in common. Before long we had hatched a grandiose plan to create a nursery school in which parents could become actively involved in their child's education. Once the idea had been refined we looked around for somewhere to advertise, but in those days, there seemed to be no appropriate publications for parents. Undaunted, we came up with the idea of publishing our own parents' telephone directory, and we launched into research with great enthusiasm in November 1995.
We both loved ferreting about finding the telephone numbers to go into our phone book. The harder they were to source, the more rewarding the search! Finally, in February 1996, our first edition was published. We were very lucky to find an excellent printing company at the outset, Communication in Print. The owner, who soon became known as ‘Joe the printer', helped us enormously as we got to know printing jargon and techniques. We never once felt patronised, even though the quality of our first edition was enough to make any seasoned printer fall off his chair laughing. Joe helped us for many years and we owe him a great debt of gratitude for his patience and kindness.
We also owe a great deal to the businesses who placed adverts in our first edition. It is incredibly difficult to launch a new publication, because advertisers have no way of knowing what return they will get for their outlay, or even whether the publication will survive to a second edition. It requires a great leap of trust for them to make a booking, and a greater leap still to advertise again, even though the response may be modest at first. Eventually we had enough bookings to publish, and with thumping hearts we turned our ‘baby' over to Joe the Printer so that he could bring all our hard work to fruition. One of our proudest moments was standing amidst all the noise and power of the presses at CIP, watching the copies flying through.
As it turned out, our new publication was a great success, and many advertisers enjoyed an excellent response from the first. We had 14 enquiries about our nursery, but the telephone rang constantly with feedback from The Family Grapevine itself. We had had such fun creating The Family Grapevine, and the interest it generated was so great, that we decided to go on with publishing and give up our nursery plans. We have never looked back!.
We now direct a publishing group consisting of 15 independent editions spread throughout the South of England, with four more areas under research and due to publish in 2006. Although we now live in Somerset, we still manage the East Surrey edition ourselves. Many of the advertisers who supported us at the beginning have remained with us to the present day. Our sincere thanks are offered to them all for believing in The Family Grapevine and everything it stands for, and a big thank you to everyone who has helped us along the way, .
